Exclusive interview with author Sarah Raynere and a review of her new book about friendship and how to keep going durring difficult times. *** 3 Stars

By Gabrielle Pantera

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 2012/5/17 - “I was sitting on the Brighton to London train one morning, when a passenger was taken ill on board and an ambulance called,” says One Moment One Morning author Sarah Rayner. “We all had to get out at a stop en route, and I ended up sharing a taxi with a group of women I’d not met before to a stop further up the line. A few weeks later, I lay awake unable to sleep, and remembered this event, and thought it would be a great premise for a novel. I started writing the very next day.”

It’s a story surviving and moving on, of growing, of exploring the human condition. The characters are believable and you will empathize with the character and what they’re going through. Feminists will like the women’s empowerment theme. One of the characters is a lesbian. If you’re looking for something light, this isn’t it. The story is full of angst. It’s about death and friendship and how to go on living.

One Moment, One Morning is the story of how one incident on the train impacts on the lives of three different passengers. On the 7:44am train from Brighton, Anna is impatient. She’s, on her way to a big meeting in London. Also travelling to London, Lou is relaxed and watching others in the car around her. Across the aisle, a husband strokes his wife’s hand. Then suddenly the man collapses, the train is stopped at the next stop to get an ambulance Karen, the man’s wife, Anna and Lou will have their lives changed by what happens on the train. One Moment, One Morning is about family, love and loss and friendship.

“From the outset my aim was to write something that didn’t shy from difficult emotional issues,” says Raynor. “I felt I had something fresh to say about three themes: bereavement, alcoholism and hidden sexuality in the context of friendship. I like to be entertained but also touched…gain greater understanding when I read, so that’s what I tried to deliver.”

“Most of One Moment, One Morning was written from my heart and life experience rather than research,” says Raynor. “But, I did find online forums brilliant. There is a lot out there about bereavement and grief, and also about coming to terms with being gay. To be able to tap into other people’s experiences and insights was extremely helpful.”

Raynor says that a side effect of writing One Moment, One Morning has been that many old friends have got back in touch. “I’ve not changed my name, so I’m still Sarah Rayner, just as I was at school and university, and because the book has been a bestseller in the UK and there’s my web address inside, it’s brought many people back into my life. My old school friends, people I studied with at university, ex colleagues, even my old English teacher have all got in touch and I’ve met up with a good many of them. Because my book is partly about how old friends help one another through crises, it seems particularly appropriate that it’s brought so many people back into my life.”

One Moment, One Morning is Raynor’s third book. Its international sales have enabled Raynor to pursue fiction writing full time. Her first two novels, The Other Half (2001) and Getting Even (2002) were well received and translated across Europe.

Rayner didn’t set out to be a novelist. Her first job was in fashion PR. “One day my boss took me on one side and told me she thought I was better at writing than schmoozing clients, and suggested I become an advertising copywriter. I took the hint, for ten years worked in various London agencies.” She had short stories published by the weekly magazine Woman’s Own, was for many years an author and copywriter.

Raynor’s fourth novel, The Two Week Wait, is being published in the UK at the same time her third novel is being released in America. Raynor is busy promoting both books. She’s also revising The Other Half and Getting Even so they can be re-released later this year.

Raynor says the most challenging part of working with a publisher is the covers. “I’m absolutely passionate about the covers of my books. I grew up in a household where words and pictures worked together. My mother wrote and illustrated children’s books. Plus I have an advertising background, so I’m used to having a big input into how things look. As a result, I find it very hard to let the design side of a book go. I imagine I am a nightmare for Picador, my UK publisher, because I am very opinionated, but hopefully it pays off. I adore the teacups cover for One Moment, One Morning. I like the American edition best of all.”

Raynor lives by the sea in Brighton. She’s lived there nine years. “The presence of the city is very strong in my book. One reader described One Moment as ‘a love song to Brighton’.” Raynor was born in London, and spent my childhood in Richmond, Surrey. She studied English at Leeds University.

Exclusive interview with executive producer Ben Silverman on the making of a Fashion Star, series finale tonight on NBC-TV at 10p/9c crowns a new top fashion designer and bridges bricks-to-online retailing with America’s 2-screen lifestyle

By Robin Rowe

Fashion Stars real winners, Macy's, Saks and H&M, TV fashions sell

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 2012/5/15 -Would it work for fashion? It’s been done before in music. Then unknowns Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson all launched in reality competition. Whether Fashion Star will launch a star to become a household name is too soon to say, but it has brought bricks-only retailer H&M online and proven that fashion can be sold from reality television as effectively as records. The biggest frustration for viewers? That East Coast viewers buy everything, that the show’s fashions sell out online before the show airs on the West Coast.

Fashion Star executive producer Ben Silverman produced such Emmy and Golden Globe-winning shows as The Office, Ugly Betty, The Tudors, and The Biggest Loser. The former NBC co-chairman’s latest show, Fashion Star, rewards competing designers by carrying their clothing lines at Saks, Macy’s or H&M.

“It’s American Idol with fashion…and you can wear it,” says Ben Silverman. “Unlike other fashion shows that are about ‘turn this garbage bag into a dress or make this meat into a coat’, this is real. You can wear this stuff. You can feel it and touch it.”

Considering how rare it is for designers to break into mass market, it may seem surprising that retail outlets are constantly looking for new designers. “One of the things they told us was, ‘If you’re going to scour the country and use the fact that these designers will be on TV so you can more access to them and more of them, that would be very valuable to us’.” says Silverman. The retailers would commit to buy, but wanted a hand in picking the top 50 new designers out of the 2,000 designers who applied. We brought them into our selection and casting process, so they knew they were good and strong. The buyers were helping us place so we knew we had contestants who could go the long haul.”

Fashion Star advertised for new designers everywhere says Silverman. “We used Women’s Wear Daily. We used fashion blogs. We told the world we’re looking for the next great designers, men’s and women’s.”

“We have no age caps,” says Silverman. “We have 50-year-old contestants. We have 20-year-old contestants. All colors…sizes. The filter is, if you’re good at design, you deserve a shot. The mentors…I looked at Jessica, Nicole, Elle and John. You need this much firepower to make things happen, and we have it in spades. Terrence is the scariest guy on the show. Unlike Simon Cowell who’s just judging, he’s, ‘I’m buying this stuff’. It’s amazing to watch the show.”

“We’ve built a whole social media content site that we shot during the show,” says Silverman. “On the social side, there are massive Facebook, Twiiter teams. They tweet during the show. We have all the NBC staff and then in staff we have ten people, four producers and six people just dedicated to digital. It’s a separate budget entirely.”

“We have Jeannie Mai, who’s one of the stars of The Style Network, doing all this additional digital content,” says Silverman. “Obviously there’s a commerce play, the stuff will be for sale that night. Inside we’re offering tons of additional footage, how the models make up their hair, what the judges and mentors are thinking. So, we’re deeply invested in the social space. We need to be as smart as possible that the message we control stays clear and clean and upbeat. Offering more robust content to the superfan than the hour mother ship show is what most of the audience wants. If you love Jessica Simpson, you want to spend more time with her, you’re have that ability on the web site.”

Fashion Star created an online commerce site for bricks-only retailer H&M. Will NBC become a retailer itself?

We had to build for H&M because they don’t do online normally,” says Silverman. “We had to build their commerce engine. That was a huge thing, too. We created a commerce play for one of the largest retailers and it could sit on NBC. It was a one-off just for this project because they want everyone going into their stores. NBC is never going to become Macy’s. Macy’s is never going to become NBC. In recognizing the strengths you bring to each other was a big moment. Lately, every business wants to own every other business’ business. This was a case where came together and said let’s all do what we do best.”

“I feel the inevitability of television’s role in commerce is coming,” says Silverman. “Whether that’s because of how people are watching TV with a two-screen experience so they can do it all at the same time. I think the idea of forcing it all through one screen is hard. I like that what we’re doing is after the show you can go buy. It’s not taking you away during the show. You’re on the emotional journey, you’re on the star-studded journey, you’re with an investment in the clothes, and bingo afterwards is your chance to go. It’s deep. We still have Jessica Simpson, the stuff you’d expect from a huge reality show. Then on the other side you’ve got the buyer, so it’s really exciting.”

This evening, the first Fashion Star will be crowned. NBC-TV, 10p/9c

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 2012/5/8 – “I just write what I feel and play it hard,” says country rock-n-roll singer Glitter Rose. “My style is very raw. I’m influenced very much by The Rolling Stones. Mick and Keith created a very poetic musical experience, with raw, natural guitars.”

Host Gabrielle Pantera will interview Glitter Rose and take callers’ questions on Gosh!Radio Meet the Music. Watch the show live at www.goshradio.com. Viewers call in each week during the show to ask questions or give a shout out to the guests. Callers phone (559) 546 1700 in the United States: and enter code 472737. Gabrielle Pantera is the entertainment editor for Gosh!TV.

The music of Glitter Rose is outlaw Southern rock, a perfect blend of country and rock-n-roll with an outlaw attitude. Her message carries emotion. “Whether its a story about someone I know, or an experience in my own life, every story I tell evokes real emotion,” says Rose. “You can feel it in everything from the lyrics to the chords I choose and the way I play them.”

Glitter Rose wrote her first album, Girl of Mystery, at age 12 and recorded it when she was 13. Her second album, Wolf’s Cry, released when she was 14. At age 15, she started the rock band Hollywood High. She released three singles with that band: Class of ’69, Bred to Shred, and Embrace the Sin. In 2007, Glitter Rose went back to being a soloist, releasing the album Southern Comfort, then the single Doublewide on the Backside. She also released an acoustic CD, GR at the PALMS. Her latest album is Dead or Alive, that dropped in March 2012.

Glitter Rose at the Hardrock Cafe Hollywood

Currently in residency at Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, Glitter Rose has performed 2,500 shows. She’s the featured performer at Southern Rock Brunch, an event the Hard Rock created around her music. In the past 14 years, Glitter Rose has played at The NAMM Show, the Dallas International Guitar Festival, Whisky a GoGo and House of Blues in Hollywood, Poor David’s Pub in Dallas, the Main St. Arts Festival in Ft. Worth, and at Hard Rock Cafes all over the U.S.

Rose started writing music when she was 12. “I wrote country music, although I didn’t listen to a lot of country,” says Rose. “So it was something that was natural in me. I’ve always been a huge rock music fan. That’s what I was raised on, everything from Van Halen to Tom Petty.”

“As a teenager, I wrote rock music in the style of Motley Crue and Guns n’ Roses,” says Rose. “I enjoyed that for several years. Then, when I turned 20, I wanted to blend the two styles, create something unique and real. I combine what I feel and what I love in my writing.”

“The way I write songs is different every time,” says Rose. “Sometimes it starts with a guitar riff. Other times it’s words. Sometimes it’s a melody. There are also times when I might start an idea and put it aside. Then, when I’m writing something new, that prior piece written happens to fit and the two become one. Songwriting has always been such an interesting art to me…being able to express feelings and tell stories accompanied by music. It’s much like watching a movie and
hearing the words people are speaking while there’s music in the background enhancing the emotion of the words.”

Rose sang from a young age, joining the school choir at age 10. She’s a guitarist, acoustic and electric. She’s also a lefty. “When I first started writing at 12, I tried to learn on a right-handed guitar to accompany my singing,” says Rose. “I couldn’t play it. I then started playing keyboards, thinking I maybe wasn’t cut out for guitar…although I loved guitar. Then, I discovered left-handed guitars. Got my first one at 14, and played a live gig on guitar one month after learning to play. Once I got a lefty in my hands, I knew guitar was my instrument. It helps my music in the sense that I like to rock…play hard. There’s so much versatility in guitar playing.”

“Recently I had the pleasure of performing in an All Star Band including Matt Sorum, Chris Chaney, Billy Duffy, Billy Morrison, Wes Borland and Kenny Aronoff,” says Rose. “The show was for one of my endorsements, BAE Audio. I grew up listening to these guys’ music and they all were so nice to work with. Since I started in the business as a kid, I always try to perform with young, local, and up-and-coming talent, giving them an opportunity to grow and be seen.”

Some of the artists who helped Rose as a teenager included Dave Williams of Drowning Pool, Sugarbomb, and Joey C. Jones of Sweet Savage. “One of my favorite stories is about Devin Snead of Buckcherry,” says Rose. “I was on a tour to Las Vegas and Hollywood when I was 14. I lost my drummer in Vegas and had a show at Dragonfly in Hollywood in 2 days. One of our friends on the road called Devin and asked him to sit in with us. He invited us to his rehearsal space and we ran through the show. He nailed it and was so nice to work with.”

Rose says her top pick to perform with would be The Rolling Stones. “I’m big on live performance and putting on a show,” says Rose. “I think it would be incredible to get down with Mick and Keith on a stage. I’d love to perform with Steven Tyler for the same reason. And, Tina Turner would be amazing. I wish that Johnny Cash was still alive, as well as Etta James. And of course, Elvis Presley. These are all huge idols and influences to me. The power they evoke on stage is what makes them incredible performers.”

Glitter Rose was born in the Mojave Desert in Southern California in a small town on old Route 66. She moved to Texas when she was 12 and has adopted the state as her home.

Albums

Rose co-produced Dead or Alive with Dran Michael. It was mixed and engineered by John Thomas Price. “I’m very proud of the album,” says Rose. “It encompasses everything I’m about as a musician and songwriter.” The album is dedicated to the memory of Rose’s father, who passed away Christmas 2011. “He never heard the album,” says Rose. “But he helped me choose the title and I know he’s listening now.” Dead or Alive is available through iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon, and GlitterRose.com.

Rose is currently independent, but says she’d be interested in being signed to a label that will support her style and her songwriting. “I have very loyal fans,” says Rose. “My goal is to continue to make music from my heart that speaks to them.” She has fans in the U.S., England, France and Italy.

Upcoming Performances

Exclusive interview with rock-n-roll singer Brian Burn live worldwide on Gosh!Radio at 10am PST May 5th, 2012

By Robin Rowe and Joshua De La Cruz

Coming May 5th, singer-songwriter Brian Burn live on Gosh!Radio

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 2012/5/3 – “I’m a pale white ghost floating,” says indie rock artist Brian Burn. “My music is mellow rock-n-roll, with lyrics that paint imagery of love and sadness. You can take many meanings from my lyrics but mostly they are stories of past experiences.” Burn is recording his first album, Heart Is A Ghost Town.

The music of Brian Burn is an indie rock sound in the genre of Echo & the Bunnymen, Vast and David Bowie. The poetic lyrics hint at Burn’s spiritual depth as an artist. A strong mix of melody and vocals drives the music into the psyche of the listener. The songs go from soft ballads, like Alive and Hope Is a Grave, to faster uptempo numbers like Follow Me, where guitar riffs linger like shades of grey over the pounding beat of the drums.

Host Gabrielle Pantera will interview Brian Burn and take callers’ questions on Gosh!Radio Meet the Music. Watch the show live at www.goshradio.com. Viewers call in each week during the show to ask questions or give a shout out to the guests. Callers phone (559) 546 1700 in the United States: and enter code 472737. Gosh!Radio provides callers with local numbers in 15 countries that are listed on the web site. The show broadcasts worldwide on Saturday mornings at 10am Pacific time. Gabrielle Pantera is the entertainment editor for Hollywood Today.

Burn’s approach to songwriting is to try to set a mood. “I figure out what I want to say and how I want to say it,” says Burn. “I then come up with a melody. Usually the acoustic guitar helps me develop a rough skeleton of the song. I get inspired by movies and by interactions with people I love. I’m influenced by John Lennon, The Beatles, David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails.”

Burn has worked with producer Don Peake, who played guitar with the Everly Brothers and Ray Charles. Burn says he learned to produce from Phil Spector, Freddy Washington (Steely Dan) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), who came down and played on a song. Burn is currently working with Mark Dutton (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Josh Fields on a new record. Burn, who started as a singer-songwriter this year, is putting together a full band.

“Singing is something that just came naturally,” says Burn. “I have been singing since I was a little boy, I have always loved music. As a child my mom would play music in the car everywhere we went and we would sing.” Burn sings and plays the guitar and bass.

Burn has played in Los Angeles at The Viper Room, Crane’s Tavern, Bordello Bar, The Key Club, The Gig, Cat Club. He’s played at Vino’s in Little Rock and the Rockit Room in San Francisco. No upcoming performances are scheduled, but Burn says he expects to be at The Viper Room or Hemingway’s soon, to check on the web site.

Artists who Burn would like to perform with someday include Marilyn Manson, Josh Homme, Jimmy Gnecco, Ethan Johns and Ryan Adams. “I love the work these artists have done,” says Burn. “They have inspired me so much.”

Brian Burn as born in the city of Orange in California. He grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. “I really enjoyed growing up there,” says Burn. “My mom took me to my first Marilyn Manson concert when I was 13 at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock. I have really fond memories of going to concerts and becoming a huge Marilyn Manson fan.”
