The World Of Downton Abbey

Exclusive interview with author Jessica Fellowes and a review of her best-selling companion book to Downton Abbey, the TV series premiering season 2 on PBS Masterpiece on January 8th **** 4 Stars

Hollywood (Gosh!TV) 2012/1/5 – “It’s been a real delight to catch a ride on the Downton Abbey train, just being caught up in the general wave of positive feeling,” says The World of Downton Abbey author Jessica Fellowes. “At signings you meet the real fans of the show and you realize just what a broad spectrum of people the series appeals to…specifically, that it manages to cross generations. Mothers say they’ve been able to sit down with their daughters for the first time in years to really enjoy something together.”

Season 2 of Downton Abbey, produced by the British production company Carnival Films and aired on England’s ITV network, premieres to great anticipation from American fans on PBS Masterpiece on January 8th. As with Pride & Prejudice, the Downton Abbey story traces the life of a family with only daughters as they attempts to find a suitable husbands, and figure out how the families way of life will survive in a world changed by war and the industrial revolution.

The World of Downton Abbey, a book featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Downton Abbey, was released in England on September 15th, 2011, where it became a #1 bestseller. It’s a mixture of history of the manor house and actor quotes. Fans of the TV series have already made the book a bestseller. The beautiful pictures make it a keepsake and very pretty on your coffee table.

The TV series is set at the fictional manor house Downton Abbey during the reign of King George V. The exterior of the house is actually Highclere Castle, residence to the Earl of Carnarvon. It was the 5th Earl with archaeologist Howard Carter who discovered the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The castle was redesigned and renovated by Sir Charles Barry after he had built the Houses of Parliament. Highclere is open to the public in April, July and August. It’s home to the Egyptian Exhibit.

In researching the book, Jessica Fellowes interviewed the cast and crew for the series, as well as visiting Highclere Castle and the built set at Ealing Studios. “I talked to Julian Fellowes, the series creator and writer, as well as being my uncle. His knowledge of the time is almost unparalleled. Plus, I have always had an interest in that time, so I was already familiar with the history and the mood, if you like, from memoirs written by people who lived at the time, from both above and below stairs. There’s a surprising number of them and I’m delighted that the interest in the period generated by Downton Abbey has led to the rediscovery and republication of many of those memoirs.”

Fellowes writes books as commissions rather than as fictional ideas of her own. “HarperCollins bid for the rights to publish the official Downton Abbey companion book,” says Fellowes. “The agent who brokered the deal between them and Carnival Productions who made the series happened to mention it to my agent, they are both at PFD [Peters Fraser & Dunlop, a leading UK literary agency], that they were looking for a writer for the book. I went in to meet HarperCollins and the deal was done.”

Fellowes editor was originally Louise Stanley. “It was her idea it in the first place to do the books,” says Fellowes. “Sadly for me, but happily for her, she went on maternity leave before I had finished the first draft. So, after that I worked directly with the HarperCollins team, Louise Wedgewood, who was chiefly in charge of the design and production, and the publisher Hannah Macdonald.

Fellowes agent at PFD is Rowan Lawton. “I went to a drinks party and got chatting to a very nice man about writing,” says Fellowes. “He said his daughter was an agent and that we should meet. I don’t know many people who listen to their dad on these sorts of things but luckily Rowan does. So we met for breakfast at Soho House and within weeks she had found me a project: Is There A Psycho In Your Life?”

Fellowes says the biggest challenge writing The World of Downton Abbey was that there were so many stakeholders in the Downton Abbey brand. “I had to be careful that I kept them all happy. It’s obviously a very strong, authentic brand, with a lot of integrity and I had to ensure that every part of my process, from the research to the shortest caption, stayed true to that. Making sure that everything was completely accurate and yet keeping to the almost insanely tight deadline. We had just six months to produce the book and we were writing about the second series before they had finished filming it.”

In addition to The World of Downton Abbey, Fellowes has written two other books: Mud & the City: Dos and Don’ts for Townies in the Country (based a collection of columns she wrote for The London Paper) and Is There A Psycho In Your Life? co-written with the forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes. Her next book will be a business guide written with the co-founders of notonthehighstreet.com, Sophie Cornish and Holly Tucker.

Fellowes has been a journalist since 1999, starting at the Mail on Sunday. She became Deputy Editor of Country Life magazine and a freelancer four years ago. She’s written for many newspapers and magazines. She’s based in London, the city where she was born.

Fellowes says she’s had wonderful feedback from the people who’ve read the book. The TV series has been renewed for a third season. It will start production in early 2012 and premiere on ITV in September 2012. HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 9/21/2011 – “I think the American audiense is tougher then English audiences,” says The X-Factor star Simon Cowell who is bringing the hit British television series to America. “Americans have amazingly good music knowledge. They were very tough on us. I thought we’d get mauled when the audience didn’t agree with us.”

“It’s the chance of a lifetime,” says The X-Factor star Paula Abdul. ‘I think you know within seconds whether someone has it, has the X-Factor,” says The X-Factor star Nicole Scherzinger. “People are funneling their dreams through these people,” says Eric Floyd, the father of one of the young contestants. The X-Factor is a story of human triumph.

There’s The Voice, America’s Got Talent, and of course American Idol. Are we reaching saturation on singing talent shows? Not when they’re this good. Idol has more teens. The X-Factor auditions all ages. One contestant is 80 years old. The Voice has more charm and warmth. So what does The X-Factor have more of? Money!

It’s the largest prize in television history: a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. The show itself has a no expense spared feeling to it. Viewers may momentarily wonder if they’ve wandered into Extreme Home Makeover at the beginning of show as the The X-Factor semi-trailers trek on the road across America. Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger travel the nation searching for undiscovered talent 12 years old and over, whether solo artists or vocal groups.

The X-Factor host Steve Jones says that one contestant (who was having a meltdown) called him a stretched Ryan Seacrest. That’s funny and accurate too. The host does have a resemblance to Seacrest and is way taller at 6’4”.

The two-night series premiere of The X-Factor showcases the live auditions that took place in front of huge audiences at stadiums. Auditions from Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark and Seattle, and from YouTube and the nationwide MyStudio audition booths, continue the following week on September 28th and 29th.

Contestants who survive the initial auditions travel to Los Angeles for boot camp, airing October 5th and 6th. During this phase, the contestants face the panel of judges and a live audience who weigh their singing, dancing and performance styles. Those who make it through boot camp will earn a place in one of four categories: young guys, young girls, older singers and groups.

For aspiring singers who missed the auditions for this season’s X-Factor, Cowell suggests Diva Delicious that starts casting in October and to google “I want to be a star” to find other shows.

Lifetime has picked up a new unscripted series titled America’s SuperNanny.

Lifetime has ordered eight one-hour episodes of America’s Supernanny, which will be produced by by Nick Emmerson and Stephanie Schwam at Shed Media US. Lifetime executive producers are Rob Sharenow, Gena McCarthy and Jim Rapsas. 

Supernanny has is formatted throughout the world. Other countries where it is already in production are Belgium , Brazil , China , France , Germany , Greece , Holland , Indonesia , Israel , Italy , Malaysia , Romania , Singapore , Spain and Sweden.

ITVFest looks at the making of White Collar

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 8/7/2011 – In my review of the White Collar pilot in 2009, I predicted the series would be a hit. Two years later it’s one of USA Network’s hottest shows. White Collar is the story of a charming former con artist and an dedicated FBI agent who work together to solve crimes.

  Joe Henderson

  Joe Henderson is an executive story editor for White Collar. He joined the writing staff in season one. Moving to Los Angeles from Iowa in 2001, he made really good coffee for numerous bosses until getting into the Warner Bros Writers Workshop in 2008. Henderson is currently writing a pilot for USA and checking twitter too often.

  Alexandra McNally

  Alexandra McNally is an Executive Story Editor on White Collar. She joined the series at the beginning of its second season after writing for the CW series Gossip Girl and the remake of Melrose Place.

  McNally gained attention as a winner of the Warner Brothers Television Writers’ Workshop. She was also a finalist in the Walt Disney Studios/ABC Television Writers’ Fellowship, and a second-round finalist at the Austin Film Festival. Her short film script, Lost and Found, received a grant from Bravo! and was produced in 2008. It stars the Gemini-nominated actress Ellen Dubin (of Napoleon Dynamite) and was directed by Michael Kennedy.

  While at BBDO Toronto, McNally created award-winning advertising campaigns and producing Superbowl commercials for clients such as Pepsi, FedEx, Mars, and the Campbell’s Soup Company. McNally volunteers with Heal the Bay and is a mentor with the Young Storytellers Foundation. She is also a devoted yogini and a graduate of the Surf Diva surfing academy for women.

  Jim Campolongo

  Jim Campolongo is an Executive Story Editor. He has been writing White Collar since the show’s initial pick-up in season one.

  Campolongo was a head writer for the popular web-series LonelyGirl15. Prior to LG15, he was a winner of the Warner Bros. Writers Workshop for television. Campolongo has received awards in filmmaking from the New Jersey State Governor’s Office and from the National Foundation for the Advancement of The Arts.

  Matt Negrete

  Matt Negrete is a story editor for White Collar. He joined the writing staff in its second season.

  He began his career at Disney Television Animation where he did writing, story editing, and producing for many of their animated hit TV series including The Lion King’s Timon & Pimbaa, Fillmore and Kim POssible. He developed and executive produced 52 episodes of the Disney Channel series American Dragon: Jake Long. At Nickelodeon, Nagrete wrote for the live action comedy Unfabulous starring Emma Roberts and the animated children’s series Making Friends. Nagrete is a graduate of the University of Southern California. At age 16, he got his first paying writing job running the employee newsletter of Wild Water Adventures, a rural water park made famous by its widespread health code violations and frequent lightning strikes.

CBS Fall 2011 Shows and Schedule Features Two and a Half Men

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 8/3/2011 –On Monday’s the new kid on the Monday comedy block for CBS is 2 Broke Girls which is about two women from very different backgrounds. Max, played by Kat Dennings, poor from birth, and Caroline, played by Beth Behrs, born wealthy but down on her luck are waitresses in the same Brooklyn diner, who come up with an idea for a business that they need $250,000 for. Can these two who are barely friends become business partners?

This is a multicamera comedy is Exec Producered by Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings. Both are also writers on the show. Other cast members are Matthew Moy, Garret Morris and Jonathan Kite. It airs  at 8:30pm to 9:00pm between How I Met Your Mother and the new Two and a Half Men.

Ashton Kutcher’s joins Two And A Half Men. His character’s name is Walden Schmidt who’s an Internet billionaire. Nina Tassler revealed at the Television Critics Association CBS press tour. She didn’t reveal how Kutcher’s character connects with Alan Harper played by Jon Cryer and his son Jake played by Angus T. Jones.

Thursday has two new shows. How To Be a Gentleman is a comedy about a Alan, played by David Hornsby, ) a journalist who writes a column on how to always be a gentleman no matter what. There  is also some upheaval at the magazine he writes for as it has just changed ownership. Exec Producers are David Hornsby, Ted Schachter and Adam Chase.Horsby is the writer on the show as well. Other cast members are David Hornsby, Kevin Dillon, Dave Foley, Nancy Lenehan, Rhys Darby and Mary Lynn Rajskub. It airs at 8:30pm to 9:00pm in between the Big Bang Theory and another new show Person of Interest

The other new show on Thursday is Person of Interest a  crime drama centered on a presumed dead ex-CIA agent, played by Jim Caviezel, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire played by Michael Emerson to prevent violent crimes in New York City. Exec Producers are J.J. Abrams, Greg Plageman, Jonah Nolan and Bryan Burk. Producers are Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot Plageman is the showrunner the writer is Nolan and the Director is David Semel. Another  cast member is Kevin Chapman. The Mentalist rounds out the Thursday night lineup.
