This family was a father and three daughters. The daughter could not marry because at that time women needed a dowry, which could consist of property or money to the marriage. Saint Nicholas wanted to help them so he too three small bags of gold coins and placed them in the stockings.  With the money left by Saint Nicholas the girls were able to get married.
