Exclusive interview with co-author Cari Lynn and a review of her new book about Sex Trafficking, Military Contractors, and One Woman’s Fight for Justice**** 4 Starts

By Gabrielle Pantera

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 10/1/2011 –“The idea for the movie came first. Screenwriters Larysa Kondracki and Eilis Kirwan read about Kathy’s court case and wanted to write a script about her story,” says Cari Lynn. “It wasn’t until the movie started ramping up that one of the producers encouraged Kathy to also consider doing a book of her story. That’s when I got involved.”

This book has vivid descriptions that are difficult to read at times, but the novel shows a woman who knew something needed to be done to protect these innocent women and she stepped up to right a wrong. There’s also insight into how whistleblower get treated for exposing crimes.

Kathryn Bolkovac decided to take a job as a contractor as part of an International Police Task Force human rights investigator. The job pays well and with kids going to college Kathryn needed the money and the change would be good too.

While on the job she came across evidence about improper relationships with human trafficking victims. Documenting her findings she gathered sufficient evidence to arrest local police officers and IPTF members who were taking bribes from the mafia and raping trafficked women. When she mentioned it her files vanished and her life was threatened her life. She had to flee Bosnia, after being fired. She feared for her life.

“Well, I suppose it’s strange when you consider that Kathy lives in the Netherlands and I was living in Chicago and Los Angeles, and we were trying to write a book together,” says Lynn. “We’d only met once up until that point, and then did the rest of our collaborating over Skype.”

“I did a lot of research on the war in Bosnia, on human trafficking, and on military contractors,” says Lynn. “I read a lot of State Department reports and Human Rights Watch reports and watched a lot of videos about Sarajevo. I also interviewed other police officers who were on the mission with Kathy.”

“Most of the materials are public record, a lot of transcripts from interviews and hearings, and then Kathy either sent or emailed all of her files,” says Lynn.

“There is a movie based on Kathy’s story called The Whistleblower that’s out now and stars Rachel Weisz,” says Lynn. “ The script for the movie existed long before the book.”

“Kathy has been doing an incredible job of increasing awareness of the issues of human trafficking and contractors’ involvement,” says Lynn. “The UN is really taking notice.”

“There are very few awards for books, but we did receive excellent reviews and excerpts have appeared in numerous publications, including The Guardian (UK) Sunday Magazine,” says Lynn.

Lynn doesn’t have an agent. You can get the book at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Whistleblower-Trafficking-Military-Contractors-Justice/dp/B005CDUBC2/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314341216&sr=1-1

Lynn is based in Los Angeles and is currently working on a memoir, a fantastic story set in 1970s Texas.

Interview with Brad Pitt and a review of his baseball film Moneyball opening on Sept. 23rd **** Four stars

By Robin Rowe

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 9/21/2011 – “I’m a sucker for an underdog story,” says Moneyball star and producer Brad Pitt. “Moneyball is a story about our values, about how we value other people. Sports films traditionally work on some level of this idea of wining, of overcoming adversity. It’s something in our DNA. It’s why we love our sports heroes. I couldn’t let go of this story of these guys who by necessity were trapped in an unfair game, an unfair situation.”

Moneyball is a great sports movie, as much about losing as winning. This is a film about brilliant but flawed sports personalities in the style of The Damned United. The film’s director chose not to dwell on the triumphant moments that have defined many hit sports films like The Natural and Rocky.

“I’d rather not end a film with a hero carried off on the shoulders of teammates in a stadium where fans are screaming their heads off, champagne corks flying, trophies, fireworks, and all of that,” says director Bennett Miller. “I prefer the quiet triumphs, that might not burn as bright but deeper and more lasting, where you see someone struggle internally and then come out the other side to realize something has changed within them.” Miller drew attention as a first-time director who had gained an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Capote.

Moneyball is the story of how the Oakland A’s baseball team found a way to compete against much better funded rival baseball teams. The Oakland A’s team was gutted when rival teams took their best players by offering players more money than the small market club could afford. Brad Pitt plays the role of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who in the film explains that what he’s about to do is fundamentally change baseball from how teams have played in the past, that what they’re going is akin to Las Vegas card-counting. They’re going to try to beat the house at its own game.

Every baseball fan knows that a player’s game statistics can increase the odds of a team winning. But what does that mean to a team that can’t afford star players? The Oakland A’s general manager’s radical plan is to draft undervalued misfit players whose numbers exceed their reputations, who are not well-rounded players. Will putting together a team that has better numbers as a group, rather than based on the individual stats of star players, win the World Series?

Brad Pitt acknowledges that a film about statistics, even baseball statistics, is not the easiest subject to make. He says it took a long time to get the film made and stopped and started many times. “We couldn’t make The Natural here,” says Pitt “The Natural has been done. We couldn’t make Rocky. Rocky’s been done. This had it’s own verve and life to it, it’s own story to tell. It was a difficult one to complete. I think that’s due to the complex material.”

Moneyball is based on the book by former Solomon Brothers trader Michael Lewis, known for business and politics bestsellers like Liar’s Poker and The New New Thing.

Brad Pitt loved the book and found Billy Beane a complex character. One of Beane’s quirks was to never watch his own team’s games in person. “When you make your decisions based on the long haul and 162 games, to sit there and stare at every event would be the same as staring at your 401K on a minute by minute basis,” says Billy Beane. “You’re better off checking it quarterly. That’s my objective reason. My emotional reason is that there’s a struggle in myself. I’m objective but I’m also emotional, and I really don’t want to be in a position where I’m making decisions based on my emotions.”

“Brad had personal reasons for wanting to make this story,” says director Bennett Miller. “We saw the movie as a classic search-for-wisdom story. I think there’s something thrilling about people relinquishing long-held, conventional, conformist, universal beliefs. It gets really exciting when there are personal consequences to it. On the surface, he’s trying to win baseball games, but beneath it all, there’s something he’s trying to work out. That is a timeless story.”

“In many ways, Billy’s going up against an institution, one that many smart individuals have dedicated their lives to,” says Pitt. “The minute you start questioning any of those norms, you can be labeled a heretic or dismissed as foolish. These guys had to step back and ask, ‘If we were going to start this game today, is this how we’d do it?’ A system that has worked for 150 years doesn’t work for us. I think that’s applicable to the moments of flux we’re experiencing today.”

“Necessity is a great motivator,” says screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. “Billy knew that if he played the game the same way as the Yankees he’d lose. He had to change the game. I don’t think Moneyball is anymore about Sabermetrics than The Social Network is about coding.” Sabermetrics is the science of using stats analysis to predict the future value of a baseball player.

Sorkin is currently developing “More As This Story Develops,” a new series with HBO set behind the scenes at a cable news show. Sorkin has acquired the rights to The Politician, the best-selling book by Andrew Young about the downfall of former Senator John Edwards. He will adapt the book, produce and make his directorial debut with The Politician.

The story of two unlikely friends who should be enemies *** Three Stars

by Gabrielle Pantera

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 2011/8/09 – 30 years ago Disney released The Fox and the Hound, their 24th animated film. Tod, the Fox, is orphaned but he’s got Copper, a hound who’s his best friend. As Copper grows up he finds out he’s supposed to hunt foxes. Can the two stay friends when they’re supposed to be enemies?

In 1981 the new generation of animators at Disney, Ron Clements, Glen Keane and John Musker worked on this one and went on to do many other well known Disney movies.

The animation is clean and bright. The original can be a bit deep for kids, and parents will need to be ready to talk about some sad and violent events in the original movie.

In 2006, 25 years later, they released The Fox and the Hound II.

In The Fox and the Hound II, Copper wants to join The Singin’ Strays, a group of harmonizing dogs that are in the local county fair. He all but forgets about Tod who tries to fit in. With the encouragement of Dixie, who’s part of the The Singin’ Strays, Tod manages to sabotage an important audition. Dixie tells Copper that Tod didn’t do it to hurt him, he just wanted to be friends the way they used to be.

Both stories are about this unusual friendship.

The voice talent on The Fox and the Hound was a mix of old and new Hollywood voices. Mickey Rooney, Pearl Bailey, Pat Buttram and (in 1981) up-and-coming stars Kurt Russell and Corey Feldman.

The Fox and the Hound 2, featuring the vocal talents of Patrick Swayze, Reba McEntire, Lucas Grabeel and Trisha Yearwood.

For the first time ever both are in high-definition.

Further engaging fans and families beyond the story itself, Disney has included five unique bonus features that provide consumers with the ability to further immerse themselves in the storyline, its history, and the characters themselves with an entertaining look inside the fascinating collection of unlikely friendships in the animal kingdom, Disney’s historic and legendary animators, the making of the music and more. They are as follows:

Unlikely Friends: Stories about surprising friendships in the real animal kingdom

One Night in Turin documentary examines the heartbreaking loss of British team at the 1990 World Cup *** 3 Stars

By Gabrielle Pantera

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 6/21/2011- England came so close to winning the 1990 World Cup. Told from the perspective of All Played Out author Pete Davis with a voice-over by Gary Oldman. The emotion of each player from both teams as they take their last shots at making a goal, and their relief when they do it is all there to see. What’s missing are current interviews with the players and how what happened then affects football today.

Even though we know who wins, we can still cheer with the crowd. For Americans, who call English football soccer, this documentary by James Erskine is a fun way to learn about England’s football history. In the summer of 1990 England participated in the World Cup in Turin, Italy. They played West Germany, which was the last time Germany played as two separate countries. The English team played phenomenally yet suffered a heartbreaking loss in double overtime. English fans were devastated.

The film is comprised of archive footage, much of it previously unseen, with some shots recreated by Lol Crawley. The recreated shots are close-ups of isolated shots to create a heightened sense of drama. A football is placed on the penalty spot then it cuts back to the archive footage where you see the real kick of a failed or scored goal.

Other incidents of the time were the poll tax riots, English hooligans and the press baiting politicians, particularly sports minister Colin Moynihan. One Night in Turin recaptures the mood of a country and an era that had pinned its hopes on victory only see them dashed.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 5/4/2011 – “The role of Bob was probably one of the more difficult things I’ve ever done,” says The Incredibles star Craig T. Nelson, the voice of Mr. Incredible. “I really empathized with him as a human being. Here’s a guy who is literally able to leap tall buildings and do all kinds of super-heroic things, but that isn’t what makes him special. It’s his value structure and his moral strength, not his mighty feats that I really responded to. He’s one of those people I’d really like to meet and get a chance to shake his hand, because he knows what counts and he has a good sense of himself and his family.”

“Craig has an authoritative voice but also a wonderful, easygoing kind of humor that really lends itself to who Mr. Incredible is,” says The Incredibles director Brad Bird. “You can definitely see his voice fitting into this big, strong, hulking body yet there is also a real vulnerability in him-enough so that you really relate to him simply as a man looking for something he has temporarily lost-and when the scene needed to be intense, he was right there.”

“I quickly discovered that Brad and his team had an extremely specific idea of what they wanted because they’d lived with this story so closely for such a long time,” says Nelson. “They perfected the script and knew this family inside and out, and every other which way. So it was up to the actors to bring to life exactly what they had in their mind’s eye.”

Bob Par, secret identity Mr. Incredible, and his wife Helen, really Elastigirl, are married and have three kids. They’ve left the superhero life and want to blend in as an ordinary family. Bob is a bored yet reliable insurance salesman. Helen a homemaker. Bob yearns for the excitement of the old days. When a secret mission goes wrong, the whole family must pull together and come out of hiding.

With The Incredibles, writer-director Brad Bird and Pixar Animation Studios created a computer-generated world that’s rich, complex and human. Bird directed Toy Story 3, Up and Ratatouille. The cast of The Incredibles includes Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter, Academy Award-nominee Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Lee, Wallace Shawn, Sarah Vowell and Spencer Fox. Brad Bird is the voice of fashion designer diva Edna Mode.

Blu-ray bonus fetures include The Incredibles Revisited, a round table discussion with Brad Bird, producer John Walker, story supervisor Mark Andrews, supervising technical director Rick Sayre, production designer Lou Romano, character designer Teddy Newton, and supervising animator Tony Fucile. Paths To Pixar: Story Artists provides insight into their work, inspiration and path that led them to a career at Pixar. Studio Stories: Gary’s Birthday shows how to make a movie when there are not enough work days and too many birthday parties. Ending With A Bang: Making The End Credits interviews DP Andy Jimenez and character designer Teddy Newton about the process of creating the end credits for the film. The New Nomanisan Island Redevelopment Plan is a guided tour of Nomanisan, pitching the island as a vacation resort paradise.

The DVD in the 4-Disc Blu-ray combo pack includes The Incredibles feature film, the short film Jack-Jack Attack, and Pixar’s short film Boundin, nominated for the Oscar for 2003 Best Animated Short.

By Gabrielle Pantera

Tron Legacy, Olivia Wilde kicks electrons

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 4/19/2011 – “Whenever I see a big epic film where the character has aged from being a young boy to an old man, traditionally there are different actors playing him in those stages,” says Tron star Jeff Bridges. “That’s always a little bump for me as I’m sitting there, when they change from one actor to the next. But now as an actor it’s very gratifying to know that I can play myself or the character that I’m playing at any age, from an infant to an old man. That’s really exciting, especially to be part of this groundbreaking technology.”

The Blu-ray set includes the original Tron and the sequel.

In the original Tron movie, Jeff Bridges gets diced by an experimental laser and sucked into the master computer. To get out he forms alliances with programs developed by his coworkers. He must get back to the outside world to save the company and the world from the being dominated by the master control program.

In Tron Legacy, Garret Hedlund is the rebel heir to Encom, the son of Jeff Bridges’ character. The son doesn’t want to run the company because the company somehow took his father Kevin Flynn away from his as a child. While at his father’s abandoned arcade, the son finds a secret passage. He gets sucked into the computer just as his father was. He must find his way back to the portal to get home or disappear forever like his father did.

Legacy starts storylines only to abandon them. The son of the villain in the first movie is a programmer for Encom and on the board. The two sons never interact. After the characters move into the computer things pick up. The character of Quorra, played by Olivia Wilde, gives Tron a heroine, a girl who can kick the bad guys. However, the computer world is the real star of the movie.

Jeff Bridges picks up with Flynn where he left off, just a bit older and wiser. However, with the hood and the cape, at times he seems more like Obi won Kenobi from Star Wars. His clone and younger self Clu is a machine on a rampage in search of perfection, a familiar Star Trek storyline.

“Clu had to look, feel, breathe and act exactly like the young Jeff,” says Tron visual effects supervisor Eric Barba,. “Jeff gave us some really great performances to do that with, but it had to be a believable, realistic human and in this case a perfect early 1980s Jeff Bridges. We took our Emotion Capture technology and pushed it far beyond anything we’ve done. It raised the bar higher than we’ve seen before.”

“TRON: Legacy is the first film to use the Helmet Mounted Camera in live action, allowing the actor to interact with others in the scene. The technique enabled us to come up with scenes that weren’t possible,” says producer Sean Bailey. “We had a different challenge than Benjamin Button: what Brad Pitt looks like at eighty years old is speculative, but most people know what Jeff Bridges looked like when he was in Against All Odds, so we had to match that. It wasn’t just technology for technology’s sake it enabled us to write in a whole new way.”

It’s worth watching both movies. Tron the Original is a classic that looks great on Blu-ray. The aspect ration, for IMAX, won’t quite fit the standard screen.

Special Features… First Look at Tron: Uprising, the Disney XD animated series. Visualizing Tron- How did the filmmakers bring to life the gorgeous world inside the GRID. Installing the cast, interviews with all the stars of Tron: Legacy and their experience in making the movie. The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed, a Blu-ray exclusive interactive bonus. Tron: Disney Second Screen, a Blu-ray exclusive interactive bonus. Using your iPad or computer, watch the movie with exclusive interactive elements available on your 2nd screen. Launching the Legacy is a story filled with an entire world’s history and mythology, how the writers and filmmakers created this complex fiction.

Disc Roars…Watch director Joseph Kosinski use the raucous crowd at Comic-Con to record actual ADR for the disc game stadium crowd. Music video… Derezzed” written, produced, and performed by Daft Punk.

Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (2010) $39.99

By Gabrielle Pantera

Tangled, the fiftieth animated feature from Disney, now on Blu-ray

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Gosh!TV) 3/29/2011 – “Rapunzel is a young woman who is on the eve of her 18th birthday,” says Tangled star Mandy Moore., the voice of Rapunzel. “She’s becoming an adult and she finds herself in a situation where she’s able to go beyond the tower walls that have shielded her all her life. She ends up on a crazy adventure with a young man called Flynn Rider. She has the time of her life.”

Rapunzel is Disney’s 50th full-length animated feature film. It’s a modern twist on the classic story of Rapunzel, the girl who has long magical hair. Rapunzel spends her first 18 years locked in a tower. Her mother (Donna Murphy) says it’s to protect her from those who would steal her magical hair. Rapunzel dreams of seeing the the floating lanterns that always appear in the sky on her birthday. When the thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) uses her tower to hide from the authorities she forces him to take her to see the lanterns. At turns she’s afraid and excited about her adventure. This Disney princess grows up before the audiences eyes, very inspiring for young girls. Flynn, the bad boy of the move, becomes a romantic hero. For ages 6 and up.

“I was so excited when I found out I was going to be the voice of Rapunzel,” says Moore. “I remember the moment clearly. I was working in New York at the time. I was with some friends and my husband, and I screamed as soon as I found out the news. I was over the moon.”

“Flynn is the male lead of the film and he’s the archetypal prince character, but he’s not a prince,” says Tangled star Zachary Levi, the voice of Flynn Ryder. “Instead, he is a charming and an arrogant bandit. Deep down, Flynn has a good core. However, you don’t see that at the beginning of the movie. You discover this about Flynn as the story unfolds because this characteristic is brought out of him through the purity, love and naiveté of Rapunzel.”

“These are two very different characters that end up learning a lot from each other on a rather crazy adventure,” says Levi. “ I like to think of Tangled as an animated, family-friendly Romancing The Stone. In my eyes, that’s exactly what the movie is like to watch.”

“This movie is special because it’s the 50th animated motion picture from the Walt Disney Animation Studios,” says Disney chief creative officer John Lasseter. “This is the studio that started it all with Snow White And The Seven Dwarves many years ago. This is the studio that has never stopped making animated films. It’s never closed its doors. I’m so proud that Tangled is the 50th feature in our history. It’s a very fresh-looking movie, it’s very funny and the characters are great. The story is emotional and the songs are fantastic. I’m incredibly proud of it.”

“ The story is based upon the well-loved tale of Rapunzel, but this has a fresh, modern and contemporary feel to it,” says Lasseter. “The characters and the humor are very modern, but it is also a story with a heart. The hallmark of every Disney film is its heart. That’s what Disney animation is all about. Walt Disney always said, For every laughter, there should be a tear. And that’s something we truly believe in.”

“We always strive to create movies that are funny and entertaining,” says Lasseter. “We want characters that are so engaging and appealing that you want to be with them, but it’s that heart of the movie that stands out for me. It’s the heart of the movie that makes audiences remember how a film made them feel.”

“One of my favorite sequences in the movie is the one we developed with the floating lanterns,” says Lasseter. “Personally, these sequences are very special to me. “Why? Well, let me tell you a little story. My wife and I headed to Bora Bora, Tahiti, for our 20th wedding anniversary. The head of food service at the resort we were staying at was an Italian guy, but he married an Indonesian woman and he had lived in Indonesia for years. He said to us, “I have something special for you.” And on our 20th anniversary, he brought out a lantern. He had us sign a little note to each other, which we taped to the top of the lantern, and then he lit it. It was dusk, we were on the beach and it was very romantic. The guy then said, “Kiss and let it go.” So we let it go and that beautiful lantern floated up into the Tahitian sky and drifted off into the distance.”

“It was beautiful, “says Lasseter. “We had dinner on the beach that night and we watched the lantern float away for about two hours until it was a tiny, little speck in the sky. It looked like a star up there. It was one of the most magical things that has ever happened to me, so when we started talking about doing something special for Tangled, I mentioned this story to the team. We got on the Internet and we discovered that there are festivals in Southeast Asia where thousands of these lanterns light up the sky. We’d never seen anything quite like it, so it became an inspiration for the movie.”

“Rapunzel’s walls are really a reflection of what she could see from her window as well as what she was thinking about,” says Tangled conceptual artist, Claire Keane. “There was a definite plan with specific choices made in choosing the colors of Rapunzel’s walls. It was important to create how Rapunzel would create, not how I would create, so I had to try a variety of different things that would express her world.”
